Hex Dance
Hex Dance develops the visual language first explored in Hex, translating the square-and-circle motif from screen print into a larger and more expansive oil painting. Built from a network of overlapping forms, the composition explores how a limited set of shapes can generate complex relationships of colour, transparency and space.
Layers intersect across the canvas, creating shifting optical interactions where colours merge and separate. Circular forms appear to move through the structure, producing a sense of rhythm and choreography that gives the work its title. Despite the precision of the composition, the painting retains a sense of fluidity, as forms seem to emerge and dissolve through successive layers of translucent colour.
Balancing order with movement, Hex Dance extends the formal investigation of the original print while embracing the scale and luminosity of oil painting. The result is a dynamic composition in which forms become animated through colour, repetition and light.
